While culture and heritage remain at the core of the town’s DNA, modernity slowly catches up in laid-back Yogyakarta. The proliferation of fancy boutique hotels such as Gallery Prawirotaman Hotel is a testament to that. Blending local flair with contemporary interiors, the hotel offers a unique story to staying guests while providing an immersion to Yogyakarta’s rich art culture.

With 94 well-appointed rooms (each with its own balcony), Gallery Prawirotaman Hotel is strategically located in Yogyakarta with easy access to famous tourist spots such as Kraton for an in-depth exposure to their political history, and the local souvenir district of Malioboro where you can grab affordable batik clothing, snacks, and house decors.

The hotel welcomes you with a seemingly freshly painted white colonial-like facade and a quaint lobby with modern accents of brown couches, marbled walls, and glass chandeliers. We were served a refreshing welcome drink upon checking-in and was quickly ushered to our room located in the same floor as the reception.

Our twin bed Superior Room sported earthy colors overall, which was a humble room tone for people who wish to just sleep and unwind in the comforts of a cozy hotel. They also provided the necessary essentials — from the basic toiletries to the long computer desk which was suitable for people like me who need to use a laptop while on a holiday. The hotel WiFi was extraordinarily strong too for Indonesian standards — the only letdown was the fact that you need to manually log-in to the internet every time you close your gadget.

The unexpected surprise of Gallery Prawirotaman lies on the highest floor of the hotel. We entered the hotel’s topmost level one afternoon which happens to be the same floor as their lounge (Skylounge) with an unpretentious view of the city. At the opposite corner of the lounge is the curated art space where I found a trove of priceless paintings commissioned by the hotel. Done by various artists while hanging in large frames, the oil paintings which had elements of fields of grass, farm animals, and flowers, bore a common theme of rural Javanese living.

The hotel also offers a resort-like swimming pool area with two tranquil pools (one good for short laps and another smaller one for kids). Although we didn’t have time to swim and get some tan, the pool was definitely inviting nonetheless. Nearby the pool is their Vine Restaurant which offers an all you can eat BBQ buffet at Rp. 79,000/pax.
