While mainstream films produced in the Philippines are well-received by Filipino communities abroad via pay-per-view and international screening, there is a growing number of independent filmmakers still struggling to get the same kind of attention. It’s a well-known fact that within a limited budget, the independent or indie film industry becomes our window to raw and unadulterated stories. A lot of these films offer us insights that go beyond what we just want. We are given what we need to see. Such is the upcoming OFW-made film entitled Angel in June.

Angel in June is the first ever Filipino independent film produced and shot entirely in Qatar. It is a 90-minute feature film on losing and finding hope inspired by the true story of 13-year old Angel Magno in 2007. The girl lost her life to leukemia three days after diagnosis. This film is supported and independently funded by the Film Academy of the Philippines’ (FAP) Director General Leo Martinez. The veteran actor went all the way to the Middle East for his acting participation. With him in the cast are Qatar-based Filipino actors Joyce Sison, Israel Gonzales Malabanan, Stacey Ann Canicosa, Sarakiel Tandingan, Pilar Grace Cruz-Malabanan, and David Drew Ayson. The film was written and directed by Jan Xavier Pacle.

A Renderfarm Graphics production, Angel in June is an official entry to this year’s Doha Tribeca Film Festival (November 17-24). Fellow Filipinos based in Qatar are invited to catch the film’s showing in local cinemas soon.
