Hashtags member McCoy De Leon debuts as a film actor in the 2nd ToFarm Film Festival. McCoy plays the role of Victor in Jason Paul Laxamana‘s Instalado. In the story, Victor lives in a time when the dominant form of education is through installation, a process wherein bodies of knowledge can be installed directly into brains of the people using technology owned by big corporations. Like any other educated sons and daughters of farmers— Victor and his companions would rather migrate in the city and start building their lives by simply choosing to be employees of big and capitalist businesses in urban areas or worst—the overseas. McCoy essays his struggles to afford the sky-high cost of installation; which he believes is the key to escape his rural life. In order to raise money for installation, he abandons farming and works as the housekeep of a wealthy childhood friend who has become extremely successful after undergoing a series of installations.

Written and directed by Laxamana, Instalado is a film that mirrors how agriculture in this country is being neglected and has become unpopular among younger and probable farmers of today. Even if the industry accounts for more than a third of the country’s workforce—the sector contributes less than 15 percent of the total economic output; and poverty incidence among agricultural families is much higher than the national average. The attempt to present the almost dying industry in a social science fiction film creates that image of agriculture as the least wanted or unlikely to be the route of younger generation’s career paths.
